Hello lovelies,

Ramadan Mubarak to my Muslim Ummah.

The first step to caring for your skin is knowing your skin. Understanding your skin type allows you to buy the correct products and develop the ideal routine to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Finding your skin type can be pretty confusing but it is essential to figure it out in order to understand your skin. Read on HERE for some easy tips to know your skin type.

Understanding your skin type goes a long way and it’s a major key to ensuring that you can manage your skin health to the optimum level. Your skin type is determined by many factors, including your genetics, diet, age and personal health. It can also change over time just like weather and our moods. Changes in weather, diet, hormones, emotions or menstrual period can cause your skin to feel drier, oilier, sensitive or even more acne-prone. Checking up on your skin every once and a while to see how your skin is doing is a good idea.

Oily Skin– With oily skin, shine control is a top concern.

⁃ Cleanse your face often. Oil cleansers, Gel cleansers and Foam cleaners are highly recommended for Oily Skin types. Be sure not want to use cleansers with harsh chemicals.

⁃ Avoid heavy creams and emollients is advised for minimizing the appearance of oil. Look oil-free products with ingredients like Green tea, Salicylic acid, Tea tree oil etc. that specifically help to decrease sebum production and reduce inflammation— whether in toner or moisturizer form, so that you don’t inadvertently add more oil to your skin

⁃ Exfoliate 2-3 times a week as it helps prevent clogged pores and keep skin looking smooth and soft

⁃ Use matte finish foundations which help balance the skin hydration. Also use matte powders to set your foundation/concealer and keep it in place.

⁃ Use pH balanced products and try out chemical exfoliation.

⁃ Use oil absorbing product when skin gets shiny or greasy

Dry Skin– Moisture is key to caring for dry skin.

⁃ Cleanse gently. Use a facial cleanser formulated for your skin type. Deodorant soaps and Skin care products that contains alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) should be avoided as the they are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin

⁃ Use rich and heavy moisturizers to nourish your skin cells, provide hydration and retain moisture. Ingredients such as Shea butter, Dimethicone, Hyaluronic acid are skin friendly ingredients.

⁃ Avoid oil-free and oil absorbing makeup as it makes the skin feel more dry and flakey.

⁃ Dry skin is already prone to wrinkles & aging. The sun can cause more damage to the skin, therefore, using a good quality sunscreen can help your skin look younger.

⁃ Avoid wearing wool and other fabrics that can irritate the skin. Wear cotton or silk under your clothing made of wool or another material that feels rough.

⁃ Use laundry detergent labeled “hypoallergenic”.

Normal Skin – The perfect skin type. With normal skin, you experience almost no sensitivity, dryness or oiliness.

⁃ Lighter lotions and serums are ideal for your skin type because you don’t need much heavy product to keep your skin in balance

⁃ This skin type can tolerate most ingredients, that is you can play hard with beauty products and have tons of fun experimenting with cleansers, moisturizers and masks until you find exactly what works for you.

Combination Skin – The most common skin type. Balance is the key to this skin type.

⁃ You might want to use a mild and gentle cleanser

⁃ Stay away from the same ingredients as oily and dry skin

⁃ Use moisturizers that contains antioxidants

⁃ Use products with ingredients that will help balance the skin

⁃ Use spot treatment creams for area of concern

Sensitive Skin – People with Dry, Oily and Combination skin type can also have a Sensitive skin type. Inflammation is one of the cons of this skin type, coupled with itchiness, redness, skin irritation and eczema.

⁃ Avoid products containing fragrance, live plant extract, lanolin, antibacterial ingredients or alcohol. Always read the label to confirm ingredients in products

⁃ Avoid using harsh products- cleansers, exfoliants & moisturizers. Use mild or PH balanced skin products that soothes, calm and keeps skin hydrated.

⁃ Apply sunscreen religiously

⁃ Use products with anti-inflammatory properties.

All Skin types- It’s important to remember that all skin types should use sunscreen frequently as it prevents skin cancer and the aging that comes from the sun’s powerful rays.

It is also important that the one thing all skin types have to remember while hydrating, treating and moisturizing our skin… DRINK lots of WATER!!!
