It’s Harmattan season and as we know, this weather is not friendly for our natural hair. The Harmattan season is characterized by dryness, extremely dusty and cold weather which tends to dry out our hair much faster, causing it to break and difficult to retain moisture.
Honestly speaking, my hair gets extremely dry & annoying and I tend to get lot of breakage and split ends. I took out my twists to prepare for wash day and I was mad. Like whattttt!!! I’ve never lost that amount of hair ever 😭😭. I almost went to the barbing salon to shave my hair.
I try to make sure extra care is taken on my hair during this period and wear a protective style to avoid massive loss of hair 💁
Below are my top six tips you need so you won’t end up hairless at the end of harmattan!
1. MOISTURIZE AND SEAL OFTEN
Remember the LOC/LCO method? That’s Liquid-Oil-Cream or Liquid-Cream-Oil. This is a great way to seal in moisture for your natural hair.
You can choose to use either water or leave in conditioner as liquid. Oils such as Carrot oil, Castor oil, Almond Oil etc. are increases blood circulation and aids hair growth. The cream can be Shea butter or Mango butter to seal moisture into hair strands.
2. PROTEIN AND DEEP CONDITIONING
Protein treatments such as Hair Mayonnaise strengthens the hair and deep conditioners such as Shea moisture deep treatment masque adds moisture to hair. Never forget to use a moisturising treatment after a protein one to keep your hair hydrated.
3. STAY HYDRATED
Water is good for the body. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day for healthy skin, hair and nails. If you have to take 8 glasses of water when the weather is normal then you certainly have to take more when it is Harmattan. So, drink up! Your hair thank you for it.
4. WEAR PROTECTIVE STYLES
Here is the time to make that hair you have saved on your phone for couple of weeks or months. Try something different; braids, twists, locs, wigs or weaves. It’s gonna look beautiful on you sis 😙
Headwraps protect your hair from dust and prevent moisture from drying out quickly. Feel free to try out different varieties- silk, satin scarves, Ankara wraps, baseball caps, hats etc. And do not forget to cover your hair with satin scarf or bonnet before before sleeping.
6. TRIM ENDS
If you havent had a trim in the last 3 months, this is a very good time to get one. The weather can result in dry, brittle hair. Make sure that your ends are healthy by trimming away any split ends to prevent further splitting.
Yup! That’s it. I hope these tips help you through out this weather. See you in my next post .
