1. Eat with small plates, eat slowly and don’t over eat

Eating with small plates can help you eat in small portions over the Christmas and New year holidays. Slow and conscious eating benefits include, better digestion, better hydration, easier weight loss maintenance, and greater satisfaction with your food. Meanwhile, eating quickly leads to poor digestion, increased weight gain, and lower satisfaction.

2. Eat mindfully– Mindful eating is an effective weight-loss strategy that encourages you to slow down and pay attention to your food, noticing each sip or bite you take. Mindful eating is an approach to food that focuses on individuals’ sensual awareness of the food and their experience of the food. Benefits includes-Easier digestion, weight loss, increased enjoyment of the food and reduced food cravings.

3. Avoid or limit alcohol/Stay hydrated

Drinking less this holidays will reduce your risk of developing serious health issues such as cancer, liver or heart disease and could contribute to lowering your blood pressure. A lot of people at this time of the year places their liver in the hands of God, but truth be told, Mindful and Moderate alcohol consumption is the only way to save yourself from untimely hospital visits. And while you’re out drinking away the season, and you end up with hangover, take a lot of fluids (water, tea, coffee) and eat early to help you gain strength to survive the day. Healthy sleep can help your body better regulate blood sugar levels, keep your immune system functioning properly and even improve your heart health by decreasing stress. Sleep also helps you function effectively throughout the day. It’s benefits also include-improved memory, helps maintain weight, puts you in a better mood, reduce your chances of type 2 diabetes, sleep is a natural pain killer.

5. Always keep moving

Moving your body either by exercising or walking or doing house chores gets your heart beating and your blood flowing. Other benefits includes-increased flexibility, increased strength and endurance, better control of body fat, regulation of blood sugar and improved immune function. This long holidays please endeavour to constantly move your body. You can run errands, help out in the kitchen, help with chores and constantly cleaning your sleeping area and surroundings. Whenever you feel lazy, play your favourite music, pick up a mop/broom stick or you can rearrange your space, and also partake in fun activities with family and friends. You can also take morning or evening walks with a family member or even few of your family members, it’s another avenue to connect socially.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check. Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. When it’s time to dig into that Christmas rice and chicken, don’t forget the fruits and vegetables, especially salad and (or) coleslaw.

7. Promote mental exercises/fitness/brain training

Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness, and shouldn’t be neglected. Mental fitness means keeping your brain and emotional health in tip-top shape. Promoting mental exercises can help you reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Keeping your mind mentally fit isn’t as difficult as it seems. You can add mental exercises to the many activities you already perform, such as: reading, Yoga, daydreaming, finding humor in everything, trying something new/learning a new skill, building vocabulary, playing cards with family, jigsaw puzzle, chess and so on. Do what makes u mentally alive over this holiday.
