PROTECTIVE STYLE: FAUX LOCS WITH ACRYLIC YARN

Hello beauties,

How’s it going out there? Ramadan Kareem to my fellow muslims out there! May Almighty Allah allow us to witness more of this blessed month in good health, wealth, blessings and more success 🙏🙏🙏

I’m going to share my experience bout a protective hair style I wore last year and few tips on how to go about it. I didn’t have much fine pictures as my phone was faulty then. This might be a long post, so please don’t hesistate to grab a cup of coffee, glass of orange juice or green tea and popcornsss 🍜

FAUX LOCS has been a trending hair style since the 90’s especially on natural hair beauties. They serve as a great protective style as it completely covers the natural hair from sun, pollution and all. They resemble locs or dreadlocks. It can be made with either human hair, yarn or synthetic hair such as Marley hair or Kanekalon hair. Acrylic yarn (Brazilian wool) is less expensive than synthetic hair and light-weight. The hair is wrapped tightly around braids/twists in a downward motion to resemble locs.

When considering this protective style, ensure you wash your hair to remove build ups and deep condition very well. I’ve had this style in mind for months before i finally concluded on making it. I booked a date with the salon after having a fresh, clean and moisturized hair. It took about 6 hours to get this installed. I told the stylist i didn’t want it tight, tho I could still feel my head swelling. Ok, that’s me exaggerating, but tbh i really don’t like making my hair especially when i have to sit down for hours to make it 😢😢. I used acrylic yarn also known as Brazilian wool in color black and brown, medium in size and long in length, i used 8 bundles which cost me about 2000 and I was charged 3000 by the stylist. I wanted to use Marley hair was a bit pricey considering the quantity I wanted.

So after 6 hours, I was done with the locs, I almost cried and flunged my phone when the stylist was trying to pack the hair up in a bun 😂😂. The hair was really lovely, i found it hard to turn my head while sleeping for like 2-4 days, as a bush girl that makes protective style at most thrice a year. I made sure to moisturize my scalp with a mixture of water, leave in conditioner, coconut oil, olive oil and tea tree oil in a spray bottle since my hair couldn’t get moisture while it was wrapped in yarn. I wore this style for 8 weeks, which I washed after the first 4 weeks. I curled the tips using tiny rollers in the picture below 👇

Factors to consider when thinking about wearing this style includes;

  • Type of hair (human hair, yarn, Marley etc.)
  • Length of hair
  • Thickness in size
  • Tightness

I’m thinking of wearing this style again. I read bout crochet faux locs, maybe i should try that out. It seems much faster, less time consuming as they will be no need to wrap the natural hair around to create locs.

Thank you for reading ❤
